As West Hawaii continues to bring back its festivals and events, I wanted to give you a few things to do this month to enjoy Kona AND Halloween! We have a brand new festival, a fun trail race, shopping on Alii and a free family friendly Halloween event!

October 13-15
First Annual Aloha Shirt Festival
Outrigger Kona Resort & Spa

From the inspiration of fashionistas, Uncle George Na‘ope, and Cyril Lani Pahinui, we have crafted one of the biggest spectacles of the year for Kona to celebrate Island heritage. The festival focuses on the local garment industry offering vintage Aloha Wear exhibits, sales, and appraisals, contemporary designers, vintage collections, and repurposed clothing collections showcased in exciting fashion runway shows. Fashion fair pop-ups feature individual designers, wearable arts and accessories, giving participants the opportunity to connect with their favorite designers.

We invite you to explore the history, artistry, and production of Hawai‘i’s enduring fashion statement, the Aloha Shirt. This exhibition of over sixty objects, including original textile artwork, production sketches and swatches, advertisements, and vintage shirts tells the story of an industry that has left an indelible mark on fashion in the United States and the world.

The exhibition includes selections from private collections of Gwen and Evan Olins of Flamingos and Hula Heaven, and Sylvia Kop of Hula Supply Center, provides visitors the opportunity to view Aloha shirts from a designer’s perspective, as well as excellent vintage examples of the finished product.

Held monthly on Alii Drive near the Pier, the street is closed for the Stroll from 1-6pm, with local vendors and artists’ booths. Leashed dogs are ok.

Run for the Dry Forest: Dash for the Top! 5K/10K OR 1/4-mile keiki run

The race will take place at Pu’uwa’awa’a Forest Reserve from 6:45am till noon at 71-1646 Hawai’i Belt Rd. The race is a 10km run, 5km run/walk and 1/4-mile keiki run. You can choose to run or walk a 5km course (suitable for most people) or do a 10km run (an “extreme trail running experience” featuring a 1200 ft elevation gain in the first 3 miles). There is also a free fun, non-competitive 1/4-mile keiki run on flat surfaces; parents are welcome to join the kids. Pu’uwa’awa’a is home to several species of endangered birds and many endangered plants, some of which are found nowhere else in the world. Proceeds from the race events contribute to conservation of these species. Registration is required. PLEASE NOTE: No pets are allowed, as there are endangered nene geese in the area. Cost: $35 per entrant for 5k/10k. For more information, contact the race director at 808-315-5101, email edith.d.adkins@hawaii.gov or visit the Pu‘uwa‘awa‘a Facebook page.
