Mauna Loa volcano is erupting tonight for the first time since April 1984 and we can see it from Kailua Kona. 90 miles away! Here is a video we took at 2 am at the Kailua Bay pier in the heart of Kailua Kona. There was a small earthquake tonight and what the island has been waiting for is currently happening..Mauna Loa has awakened. USGS says it’s in the caldera of the summit in Volcanoes National Park and is not a threat to the community at this point. This is pretty surreal.
And no, Kona is not in the direct path of a flow from Mauna Loa.
