Kiholo Bay with its brilliant blue lagoon. Called Wainanaliʻi Pond, where the top 1/3 is fresh cold water coming down from the mountain in underground lava tubes and the bottom 2/3rds is sauna warm ocean water.
Wainanaliʻi Pond – is a unique body of water, and known as "Hawai’i’s Blue Lagoon". It is wedged between the hardened lava of the Mauna Loa eruption in 1859, and a coconut grove.
Interesting to note, this area has TWO lava flows from TWO different volcanoes. The first is from Hualalai in 1801 and the second is Mauna Loa, from 1859, which ultimately covered and destroyed the fishing village that was once thriving here.

⚠️ Folks need to be careful of private properties along that coast and stay out of the private fishpond down there. At the northern end of the bay where the lagoon in this post is located, there’s a fish pond connected to the ocean via a man-made channel. It is an important feeding and resting site for Hawaiian Green Sea Turtles and other marine life. The 7 acre site there was donated to the Nature Conservancy and it is currently under the stewardship of the Hui Aloha Kīholo group.
🔹 Keep in mind that there are no facilities, no lifeguard, be prepared by packing plenty of water and reef-safe sunscreen.
