I recently read a great book about motivation and self awareness that used the metaphor of the different belt colors of martial arts to explain “The Art of Badassery”. You have to be a bit of a bad ass to move to an island. You just do.
There are just so many unknowns, that you have to possess a level of courage and faith to even consider doing it! Add to that resilience when you get here, intention and fortitude to stay here and patience and strength to make a life worth living here. Take it from me! I left after my first year, with my butt kicked! I literally took the warrior stance to come back full time five years after I tried it in 2005 and dug in and made it work.
So, I thought you may enjoy reading this if you are considering the move and want a bit of motivation. And remember, since I came back in 2010 thinking, how come no one ever tells you the path to make it work, I wrote “How to Move to Kona”, “The Insiders Guide to Buying Real Estate on the Big Island”, the West Hawaii Moving Resource Guide and a personal memoir I wrote in 2020. If you want those you can buy the books on Amazon or you can join the Ohana at our real estate website, 365HawaiiRE.com and get the pdfs for free!
How to Be a Bad Ass When Moving to Hawaii Island
Title: Riding the Waves: Navigating Relocation Through the Surf Belt Metaphor
Relocating to Hawaii Island can feel like stepping onto the dojo floor for the first time, uncertain yet eager to learn and grow. Just as in karate, where practitioners progress through different belt levels, navigating the stages of relocation requires patience, resilience, and a willingness to embrace change. Moving to West Hawaii in particular, is like embarking on a thrilling surfing adventure, where each wave represents a new opportunity for growth and discovery while gaining a deep respect for the ocean’s rhythm and the danger of the lava rocks.
Let’s explore how each surf belt color symbolizes a phase of the relocation journey, from white to black, and how riding the waves can lead to a life of fulfillment and harmony in paradise.
White Belt: The Adventurous Spirit
Like a beginner surfer paddling out for the first time, moving to Hawaii begins with a sense of wonder and excitement. Everything feels fresh and invigorating, from the scent of plumeria in the air to the sound of waves crashing on the shore. Embrace the spirit of adventure with an open heart and a willingness to dive into the unknown, ready to ride the waves of change that lie ahead.
Yellow Belt: Finding Your Sea Legs
As you settle into island life, you start to find your sea legs and navigate the ebb and flow of daily living in Hawaii. Much like earning a yellow belt in surfing, this phase is about gaining confidence and stability in your new environment. You explore the local beaches, learn about Hawaiian culture and customs, and begin to establish routines that align with the rhythm of the islands.
Orange Belt: Embracing Ohana
In Hawaii, ohana means family, and building connections within the community is essential to feeling at home. Like advancing to an orange belt in surfing, this phase is about deepening your bonds with fellow islanders and embracing the spirit of aloha. Whether it’s participating in community events, volunteering, or joining local organizations, you actively seek opportunities to connect with others and cultivate meaningful relationships.
Green Belt: Immersion in Nature’s Beauty
One of the greatest joys of living in Hawaii is the abundance of natural beauty that surrounds you, from lush rainforests to pristine beaches and volcanic landscapes. Much like attaining a green belt in surfing, this phase is about immersing yourself in the awe-inspiring wonders of the islands. You explore hidden waterfalls, hike scenic trails, and spend countless hours soaking up the sun and surf, feeling a deep sense of connection to the land and sea.
Blue Belt: Navigating Challenges with Resilience
Just as surfers must navigate choppy waters and unpredictable swells, navigating the middle stages of relocation to Hawaii requires resilience in the face of challenges. Whether it’s adjusting to island living, coping with homesickness, or overcoming bureaucratic hurdles, you draw upon your inner strength and determination to weather the storms. Every setback becomes an opportunity for growth and learning, strengthening your resolve and deepening your connection to the island spirit.
Purple Belt: Embracing Cultural Diversity
Hawaii is a melting pot of cultures, with influences from Asia, Polynesia, Europe, and beyond. Like earning a purple belt in surfing, this phase is about embracing the rich tapestry of cultural diversity that defines the islands. You celebrate traditions from all corners of the globe, savoring the flavors of local cuisine, participating in traditional ceremonies, and learning about the history and heritage of Hawaii’s people. By embracing diversity and fostering inclusion, you enrich your own experience and contribute to the vibrant mosaic of island life.
Brown Belt: Mastery and Leadership in the Community
As you continue to evolve in your new home, you embody the qualities of mastery and leadership, much like attaining a brown belt in surfing. You’ve honed your skills, forged deep connections within the community, and become an integral part of island life. Whether it’s mentoring newcomers, advocating for environmental conservation, or supporting local initiatives, you use your expertise and influence to make a positive impact and leave a lasting legacy in Hawaii.
Black Belt: Integration and Harmony in Paradise
Finally, like achieving a black belt in surfing, reaching the highest level of relocation mastery signifies a profound sense of integration and harmony in paradise. You’ve seamlessly blended your life with the rhythm of the islands, embodying the spirit of aloha in everything you do. You feel a deep sense of belonging and purpose, knowing that you’ve found your place in the world and contributed to the beauty and resilience of Hawaii’s communities.
In conclusion, relocating to Hawaii is a journey of self-discovery, growth, and transformation, much like riding the waves of the ocean. By embracing the challenges and opportunities that come your way, cultivating resilience, and fostering connections within the community, you can navigate the stages of relocation and find fulfillment and harmony in paradise. So, paddle out with courage and conviction, and let the journey begin.
