Camping in Cabins on The Big Island

If you are looking for an affordable way to spend a few days in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park or looking for a fun little staycation on the island, the Namakanipaio Campground is a hidden gem. The Hawaiian name means, "strange winds" as the campground sits in a saddle (I say Oasis!) and experiences morning breezes that sometimes turn into strong "Kona Winds". It was PERFECT when we were there this weekend, but it DID drop down to about 58 degrees, so we were very happy for the extra comforter in the cabin! We also got to get all snuggly and build a fire and watch the Milky Way appear.
The camper cabins have the same linens they use over at the Volcano House, so its a treat and the pillows are soft and its really quiet at night. The bathrooms are close to the cabins and there’s space on the grounds to set up your chairs under the trees and just chill and breathe in the smell of eucalyptus! You can make reservations by calling the Volcano House directly (808) 756-9625.

Get the full “camping big island” experience for two (2) for $40 by renting a tent inside Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. They set up and take down the equipment! All you do is call Volcano House directly and reserve this special experience: (808) 756-9625. You are also welcome to bring your own tent equipment.

We love a good affordable adventure!

We suggest also stopping into the Volcano House in the morning, getting some coffee and watch the caldera from a rocking chair in the main room with floor to ceiling windows. Take a short drive to the beginning of the Kilauea Iki trail and go for a nice 4 mile hike. In 1959, lava spewed from this crater in tall splattering fountains and a molten lava lake flattened the surface of the crater floor. It’s a 400 foot walk from top to bottom. Bring water.
