Kona Low Storm Update | What It Looks Like in Kailua Kona

A Kona Low storm rolled into Kailua-Kona today bringing strong winds, heavy surf, and some wild scenes along the seawall and Kona pier pn Kailua Bay.

In this video we head down to downtown to show you what it’s like during one of these South-facing storms. Kona Lows are unusual weather systems that flip our normal trade winds and push waves directly toward the Kona coastline. That means big surf, gusty winds, and a lot of action along Aliʻi Drive and West Hawaii.

Waves were crashing over the wall and people were gathering to watch the storm. Some people even jumped into the ocean while the surf was pounding the shoreline. Not something we recommend, but it definitely shows how exciting these Kona storms can be.

So far the Kona side has seen around three-quarters of an inch of rain, with winds gusting around 30 mph and waves building throughout the day. Events across the island are already being affected, including the Kona Brewfest which has been postponed due to the weather.

Kona storms like this are rare but they are part of living on the Big Island. When they arrive they completely change the feel of the normally calm Kona coast.

Join us as we take you out into the storm and show you what is happening around town.

Aloha from Kailua-Kona.
