New to the calendar this month are 365 Hawaii volunteer events. We are working to provide visitors AND residents with another type of fun and interesting event idea, volunteering to help the island. The Panaewa Stampede Rodeo is a two to three-day rodeo that highlights the Paniolo skills of our local cowboys, cowgirls, keiki and traveling rodeo contestants in traditional cowboy events, rain or shine, plus three events that are unique to Hawai’i. Volunteer Opportunity for a Trail Clean Up on Captain Cook Trail
Meet at the Jeep about ¼ of a mile down

Who wants to help with a trail clean up project on the Captain Cook Trail/Kaʻawaloa trail and give back to the Aina AND help keep the trail safe for everyone? Steve Blair, Malama Kaʻawaloa, is meeting folks at 8 am to spend a few hours making some meaningful gains on the trail if you want to lend a hand. Here are his suggestions:
Plenty of water – at least 2 liters per person.
Proper footwear – socks and closed toe shoes – boots are best, but any closed-toe shoe will be adequate.
Full length leg and arm coverings preferred, but not required (light leggings and a rash guard works well). You can do it in shorts and t-shirt, but you’re going to get some abrasions from the guinea grass.
Wide brim hat and/or sun block.
Leather or gardening gloves.
Safety glasses or wide sunglasses are nice, to protect your eyes from flying seeds and dust.
Some kind of tool to cut grass with:
– Sickle (standard or serrated both work)
– Lopper
– Electric hedge trimmer
– Machete
– Cane knife
Or whatever the user has available and is comfortable with. Prefer no gas-powered tools, as they’re noisy and stinky.
If they don’t have a tool, I’ll have some extra (sickles, loppers, machete), or they can just pull grass out by hand next to the trail.
I’ll bring some sharpeners to tune up the sickles.

Having recovered from a terrible automobile accident, Chihsuan Yang, returns to Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park to perform a special concert of Violin, Erhu (the traditional Chinese stringed instrument) and Electronics at the Kahuku Unit in Ka’ū. Grateful for the enrichment music has brought to her life, Chihsuan passionately shares her love and knowledge, aiming to unite and uplift others through her art.
She is an award-winning multi-instrumentalist, composer, and producer and has graced stages worldwide, collaborating with luminaries like Yo-Yo Ma, Brian Wilson, David Foster, and the Dalai Lama.
Beyond the spotlight, Chihsuan dedicates her time to playing music for patients in hospitals, drawing from her own childhood heart defect diagnosis. Through educational demonstrations, she showcases the cultural significance of the erhu in schools, from kindergartens to university lecture halls.

Kate Maley is a research technician with UH Pacific Cooperative Studies Unit in partnership with the East Hawaii Division of Forestry and Wildlife, working to better understand ʻio’s seasonal use of the landscape, particularly in Kaʻū. Ande is the Information and Outreach Specialist for the Hawaii Island Division of Forestry and Wildlife, sharing about ‘io and other native flora and fauna, their habitats, and the challenges they face.

Our own former Park Ranger Diana Miller has been chosen as “Artist in Residence” by the National Parks Arts Foundation. She earned a degree in Studio Art with a minor in Art History from the University of Maryland at College Park in 1975.
Diana lives on the island of Hawai’i near Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park, where she combines her passion for art and environmental stewardship. As a Seasonal Ranger at the Park she dedicated herself to interpreting and educating people about the islands’ unique environment. She continues to express her love for nature through her art and remains an advocate for environmental awareness. Please join her at the Kahuku Unit of Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park as she does a painting demonstration and talks about her experience painting during her residency at the Park.

The 13th Annual Wiliwili Festival will be held on Saturday, February 10th fromat the Wiliwili are keystone species in the lowland dry forest and this year’s festival will give you the opportunity to see these beautiful trees in their natural environment! The Wiliwili Festival will feature exhibitors presenting activities and educational materials at booths set up along the preserve access road.
At Hale Hana Hou, within the preserve, there will be a native plant giveaway, and opportunities to ask the experts about plant propagation, growing, and care. Food and beverages will be available for purchase as well as Waikōloa Dry Forest merchandise including t-shirts featuring this year’s beautiful artwork. Guided tours of the forest will be offered by our friends at Hawai’i Forest & Trail every hour. HFT’s knowledgeable guides have become ambassadors of our forest and helped collect millions of native seeds through their weekly giveback tour that visits the Waikōloa Dry Forest Preserve. Hiking, exploration, and self-guided tours are always an option!
Throughout the day we’ll have several free workshops including a presentation two Native Planting workshops presented by the Big island Invasive Species Committee and Forestry and Wildlife.
