5 Places to Go on The South Side of the Big Island of Hawaii

When Kilauea erupted on January 5th, we knew we wanted to go and film the newest eruption at Halema’uma’u crater in Volcanoes National Park AND go to a few new places to show you some things you can do ALL year long when you visit the Ka’u District on the way to Volcano!

We take you to two different coffee/macadamia farms, both as different as you can imagine, but equally tasty! AND we stayed at the Kilauea Lodge in Volcano to be at the edge of the eruption at the park. We ventured into the national park at 9 pm, to avoid some of the crowds, and viewed the eruption from three vantage points, the best being the area off of the Chain of Craters Road, near the Desolation Trail parking area. The lava lake was like a black map with orange roads in all directions. Truly beautiful.
The links below help you plan your trip! Check out the NPS.gov site to get some RECENT info about best way to access the park during the busy times they are experiencing right now due to the eruption.

Kaʻū was one of the six original districts of ancient Hawaii on the island. It includes the areas of South Point (Ka Lae), Hawaiian Ocean View Estates (HOVE), Hawaiian Ocean View Ranchos (HOVR), now together known as Ocean View, Nīnole, Waiʻōhinu, Naʻālehu and Pāhala.

The district contains much of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, including the volcanoes Kīlauea and Mauna Loa, and Punaluʻu Black Sand Beach, Papakōlea (Green Sand) Beach and Kamilo Beach.
