We braved some wintry weather in Waimea to enjoy the annual Waimea Cherry Blossom Festival held in a variety of venues around the beautiful town of Waimea on Feb. 4th, 2023.
Organized by members of the upcountry community and the county’s department of parks and recreation, the festival marks the blooming of the historic cherry trees at Church Row Park and celebrates the age-old Japanese tradition of hanami, which translates to “cherry blossom viewing party.” After a seasonal winter chill, the trees were just beginning to bloom when we shot this video.
The Taiko drums took center stage and really were our favorite! The afternoon entertainment was amazing and the sun had emerged by then, so it was nice to just listen to the music and nosh on the food we enjoyed from a variety of food vendors. We also enjoyed the Big Island Brewhaus Green Chili Chicken Stew! YUMMM.
