Great news today! The threat to the Daniel K. Inouye/Saddle Road highway is now OVER! SUCH good news!
The fountaining went from 200 feet high yesterday morning to only 30 feet today. "Right now we are in a transition from the high effusion portion of the eruption. This could be near the end or a longer lasting low effusion rate of the eruption."stated USGS official.
The viewing area will still be open, and starting tomorrow they are allowing tour busses of up to 15 people, although it’s not anything like it was last week.
I am breathing a sigh of relief, but in that breath is a healthy dose of VOG! Hope we see the air quality improve with the lessening of the eruption. 150 tons of SO2 down to half that, so thank goodness.
FYI-the National Guard had been called out to help with traffic mitigation and the chief said 25,000 vehicles were estimated to have passed on Saddle Road to view the lava!
Here is the link to the other eruption videos from the first.
