Booths from UH Institute of Astronomy, Thirty Meter Telescope, Subaru Observatory, Hawai’i Community College, Palamanui, MK Visitor Information Station, Project Panoptes and more to learn about space exploration.

Ellison Shoji Onizuka was the first Asian American and the first person of Japanese origin to reach space. He perished on January 28, 1986 in the destruction of the Space Shuttle Challenger, on which he was serving as Mission Specialist for mission STS-51-L. Onizuka was born and raised in Kealakekua, Hawai’i and attended Konawaena High School until his graduation in 1964. Come celebrate our local hero.

GROUNDATION

GROUNDATION’s first two albums, Young Tree and Each One Teach One, established their unique roots sound, while also commencing collaborations with foundational reggae artists. Each One Teach One features the vocalist Marcia Higgs and the Nyabinghi drumming master Ras Michael.

In 1999, while in Jamaica, Harrison met the legendary engineer Jim Fox, who did extensive production and recording for RAS Records, including their most iconic releases. This was the beginning of a longstanding relationship between GROUNDATION and Lion and Fox recording studios. Subsequently Fox re-mastered Young Tree and Each One Teach One and he recorded and mixed Hebron Gate (2002), the album that launched GROUNDATION into international acclaim. Fox has continued working with GROUNDATION on their subsequent releases helping to shape their sound on We Free Again (2004), Upon The Bridge (2006), Here I Am (2009), Building An Ark (2012) and A Miracle (2014). Together they built a catalog of genre-bending, deep, progressive roots reggae music.   This is an all age show!

After Dark in the Park program, “Kīlauea Volcano’s Crater-Filling Summit Eruptions” with USGS HVO geologist Matt Patrick

Your park is thrilled to host several special Volcano Awareness Month events in partnership with our colleagues at the USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory.

Following the dramatic collapses in 2018, the summit of Kīlauea has been in a multi-year phase of crater filling. Five separate eruptions—ranging in duration from about a week to over a year—have filled Halema‘uma‘u crater with lava flows and lava lakes. These eruptions have been accompanied by ever-changing geophysical signals recorded by the dense monitoring network. Matt will summarize the recent activity at Kīlauea summit and highlight its patterns of behavior and HVO’s monitoring techniques.
